We are all obsessed; consumed by a single desire. We are convinced that achieving this one thing will grant us never-ending happiness, unmatchable success. That it will make us invincible. No matter that we are continuously discouraged. We are repeatedly told that what we want most doesn’t exist. Yet this is one case where the human race will not give up. And one cannot be sure whether to sigh in exasperation, or beam with pride. For once, we all keep going in circles, chasing what we all dream of in one way or another. Perfection.
For sure, not enough stress is put on the power of perfection, or rather the desire of it. It can make or break a person. It can change lives, build opinions, strain relationships. Perfection is the reason we go through life, through few of us will admit it. We spend money on it, millions and billions of dollars. We put our faith in it. We rely on the belief that it is, indeed, attainable.
Ironically, these days it’s fashionable to have faults. Nothing too exaggerated, just a few to prove that we are human. This seems to be a relative term. Really, it’s all about compromise. It’s ok to be shy, as long as you look good. It’s ok to have a fuller figure as long as you can use your brain. The target may have changed shape but perfection is still the aim. The definition of perfection may be ‘with flaw or error’. We want to be what other people want. We wish to be admired, loved, idolised. It’s just a circle, going round and round.
Daily, we are faced with the prospect of failure. It’s the stuff of nightmares; the idea of not succeeding is dreadful. So we keep going in circles, because we don’t know any better. After all, we’re only human.
